Pursuit of happiness, yep it is a movies name. But, it reminds us the hardships the lead character Chris Gardner's (played by will smith)faces or better says suffers to get what he wants. what he wanted to be ? the wall street guy ? rich , make huge huge money and be able to drive Ferrari! that's the bottom-line! If there is not much money either he wouldnt have got that motivated to try that job or even if he was motivated without money we ( the world) would not care.
Ultimately its all about money!
yep, its all about money! Indian software professionals are always bothered by this the billing.
its the amount they get paid for a working hour. it starts from 20$(the least) to 100$/hr or even more. The more the billing the more he/she can make. If we bring a doctor into this math the doctor may even make 200$/hr or even more let us take this awesome lawyer who makes the magic 500$/hour and fianlly a newly immigrant desi guy who works in a grocery for 7 $/hr.
Now, let us apply the pursuit of happiness to these people and start with the desi guy!
desi guy 7$/hr:
he needs to spend as little as possible and he needs to work as many hours as possible because either of it ll reduce his bank balance significantly. he has little scope for pursuit of happiness! still he is not really such a miserable, his job is not that stressful and he started having some fun around after he cleared his loans in India . but, once he got married he started working like a bull again, now again he can not afford to spend freely or work less hours , he needs to start saving for his family...
now the software professional who makes 75$/hour...
now he is cool, he got a nice car and living in nice neighborhood, got married to a good looking girl. well set; now he went to India! He is actually doing a consultant job and he is getting no pay for the vacation! He was in India for his brother-in-law's marriage and was also taking care of his stuff in India. but, more or less he is on vacation with no work! after the end of the month for family reasons he was supposed to stay for 2 more weeks . now he is spending 6000 $ (40hrs for a week) for family reasons just by staying over in India. if he was in USA he would be making that much money! he laments oh i am losing my 6000$
6000$ is not a small thing dude!
as our pay raises our time becomes money indirectly .
this could be better explained with 200$/hour guy
this 200$/hour professional goes to a party, somehow he does not enjoy the party much and he realizes it after staying there for 4-5 hours... dude he lost some 800-1000$ just that night!
He goes to a trekking camp that weekend and he had no good time here either altogether he lost 12 hours it is something 2400$ for this guy. because if he worked for those many hours he would have got that much!
finally the awesome lawyer:
the awesome lawyer goes to a party talks to a nice girl and somehow wins her feelings and they finally get to the bed. it took him 4 hours altogether. he paid already 2000$ and now he had sex with her for 2 hours! for those two hours he is paying 1000$ even though he is not sleeping with a prostitute.
bottom-line if he is in love with a woman and he takes her out for an evening or a beautiful summer day he is spending that 500$/hr for just being with her! so, he has to make sure that she deserves his time or that much money!
if she calls him and talks to him for an hour and half in the evening he is spending for her 750$.
or if a old friend comes and says hi and hangs with him for an halfen hour with 2 Guinness beers, those two guinnes beers cost him 250$ n addition to the 12$ price for the beer! because he spent 1/2 hour of his time.
pursuit of happiness: oh, money is so bad so let us not worry about money let us live a simple life....nah thats not my point thats why i used the guy who makes 7$/hour and how much he is troubled in reality when he wants to raise family!
when you start making more money your time automatically transforms into the potential money that you can make! at some point you will start asking yourself do i need to spend my time for this person or something....!
that's my point!
still we have dreams, may be for that successful lawyer that job was his dream, passion not just for the sake of money but because thats the highest point in his profession! if he had not reached that position he would be eternally unhappy and would be still in the pursuit of happiness, other-words there is no happiness yet in his life(he did not yet taste happiness) !
happiness is a very complicated subject let me leave it here!
